Tomato photo shoot in the studio

Shooting tomatoes in the food photography studio with home economist

We had great fun over several days shooting lots of tomatoes in the studio for a lovely new client Harmoniz Seed, a global producer of vegetable seeds who’s HQ is in Israeli. They produce seeds of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers for commercial growers.

“Harmoniz, a forward-thinking breeding company, is on a mission to reignite consumer interest in vegetables by developing products that are available year-round. Initially specialising in unheated greenhouse production, the company is now expanding its focus to high-tech varieties to ensure availability in all seasons.”

Freshness of the tomatoes was paramount, so choosing exactly the right time to pick them at their glasshouses in the Netherlands and ship over to my studio was tricky but my client did a great job of bringing them over speedily and all looking great.

Still photographs were needed as well as some close up video of the tomatoes, Sue the Home economist worked her wonders on them, cleaning, glueing (yes glueing) and arranging them for photography. Props were minimal, just the odd wooden board or cloth, leaving the tomatoes to be the hero of the shot.

The video was shot using a Fujifilm X-H2, fitted to a slider and boom arm.

The final photograph of all the tomatoes together. Shot using a PhaseOne XF camera IQ3100 digital back and Blue Ring 80mm Schneider lens. Lighting was Broncolor Scoro.

Using Capture One  'Live View', a feature of the capture software where we can run a video link directly from the camera so we can see live  exactly what the camera sees. This feature is especially useful when the camera is high up above the subject where it would be very difficult to look through the viewfinder.
