At the moment I’m recovering from an operation I had a week ago, my daughters bought me some puzzle books, chocolate and some very tasty Lemon & Ginger tea which I’m sipping now.
Having more spare time than usual I’ve decided to delve into my vast archive of images and post the occasional photo and share why I took it and how the composition works, so here goes:
Girl on bus Budapest
I like the main subject of this image being off centre using composition, colour, focus, and lighting to balance and draw the eye over.
This image was taken in Budapest, I had to work quick as the bus had stopped very briefly at some lights. I could have just take a close up of the girl in the bus but that would have made the shot a bit boring (although still interesting), so I decided to keep the red bus in the right of frame, leaving a nice gap of fairly low contrast subdued colour to the pink building on the left, the car with its blazing lights helping to add that bit extra contrast in the lower left of the image.
Having a strong vertical line down the middle of frame gave the image nice separation of content, each element working to balance and link to the other, like the girl linking to the car, the red bus and pink building, and the empty space in-between giving the image some negative space and preventing it from being too cluttered, allowing the eye to travel over the scene.
I used a wide aperture, probably because it was evening and the light was low, but as it happened also helped with blurring the left of the frame nicely, drawing the eye to the girl.
